- Take his self exam on your addiction
- Determine your stop smoking date and print a pledge sheet to record it.
- Start walking or doing other cardio exercise for 30 minutes a day
- Discuss your efforts with your doctor
- Get ready for your first tobacco free day
- Avoid relapsing back to smoking
- Get relief for your built-up anxiety safely from nicotine withdrawal symptoms
- Get and maintain support for your stop smoking efforts.
Before you make a plan to stop smoking, you need to make the decision to be serious about quitting. This simple step is what becomes the root cause of failure for smokers who don’t take it seriously. After you do this, determine the date you are going to be free of tobacco by. This shouldn’t be something too close, but it shouldn’t be a date set in two years. For many people a timeframe of 60 to 90 days in the future works well. After you get to this point make sure to tell your friends and family about your stop smoking plans. This will help ensure that you have the support of your loved ones in your efforts. You will need to decide at this point as well if you are going to use a stop smoking aid to help you kick the habit. These can range from nicotine replacement therapies such as lozanges and nicotine patches, to using electronic vapor cigarettes to slowly wean yourself off of tobacco, to using herbal remedies such as NicRX, to just going cold turkey. Whatever plan you decide to use, discuss with your doctor and decide what smoking cessation support system you are going to use. This can be anything from joining a stop smoking group, to a stop smoking discussion board online, to making regular appointments with a psychiatrist. Many smokers that fail, do so because of not establishing a support system for when they quit. After you have made this decision and you are no longer smoking, ensure you get rid of all smoking related materials in your home, work, and vehicles and execute your stop smoking plan!
